Riscos Psicossociais no Trabalho Portuguese Edition eBook Catarina Paulos

When I’ve attended the opening ceremony dedicated to the campaign for the prevention of psychosocial risks in the Workplace by the Portuguese Work Conditions Authority (ACT) in 6th March of 2012, I heard the brilliant allocution of Dr. Catarina Paulos regarding this subject. In a brief but impressive discourse she managed to provide a clear explanation of each risk and how they were pervasive in the modern workplace. They are truly an enemy within that corrupts and damages individuals, organizations and societies.

Modern first world societies are well informed regarding the need of protective head gear or gloves in a construction site, or face masks to protect doctors of biological infection. There are individual and collective protection equipment for most risks and legislation to cover those issues. But psychosocial risks are far more insidious and they can and do occur in any sector, from a farm to an office there are situations where moral and sexual harassment destroy lives, persons who try to find refuge in alcohol or other drugs, jobs that are so stressful that devastate an individual until he’s burned out.

With competences both in psychology and forensic medicine, the author explains not only the genesis of the risk but also provides information regarding the identification of each risk in a laborer and strategies on how to cope, minimize and solve them. This is truly an essential work for professionals in this field, but it’s also a very interesting eye opener for the general audience.

You can also find in this book an important chapter regarding the conflict between work life and family life, European Union legislation regarding psychosocial risks in the workplace and a preface by the renowned and respected Dr. Manuel Maduro Roxo from ACT.

Just a small remark though. Here in Amazon the publishing date for this book is 2014, but it was originally published in 2009. So the legislation might not be up to date and some issues might need a revision. It would be interesting to publish a new updated and expanded version. Unfortunately this book is only available in Portuguese. An English translation and information regarding the US legislation would be interesting; and the new or enhanced risks of working in an economic crisis should also be contemplated. This review is for the printed version; which has c. 400 pages. The example pages provided by the publisher can’t be clearly read by the time this review is being written.

Great work from a highly competent and intelligent professional.
